[ After his talk with T'Challa, Steve has plenty to think about, which is what drives him to continue to wander the Solemn Grounds. A place meant to acknowledge death turns out to be an appropriate setting for the news that he received, though it's mainly relief that washes through him now.
Steve's distracted by all of it, though, which is how he ends up at the edge of the spring before he knows it. The soft sound of music had brought him here. Singing? When he spots a pair of eyes peeking up at him from the water, he's not entirely sure what to do. The mermaid draws closer to the edge of the spring, though before Steve can say anything her hand darts out to grab him by the ankle and draw him under.
While Steve reacts quickly to the sudden shift, it's not the mermaid who he sees in the spring, but a whole group of floating, bloated bodies. The faces belong to people he recognizes, to dear friends. The Commandos, each and every one. Howard Stark, the way that Steve remembers him. Peggy and Colonel Phillips and Erskine, even his mother, they stare at him with dead eyes --
None of it can be real, he knows, but how can he not be transfixed anyway? If he rises to the surface and dives back down, will they still be there? Steve remains trapped beneath the water, temporarily unaware that his Chroma's quickly draining. ]
