[It's only after Steve's had a long conversation with Bucky and caught him up on everything he feels safe telling him, only after he's sure that Bucky's sleeping off the long day and what he'd been through before all this—the train, the fall—that Steve feels comfortable sending a text.
He doubts Natasha is asleep. Sometimes he wonders if she's even capable of a full night's rest, though he's not one to point fingers when it comes to that.
[Of course she's not asleep. She had been awake refreshing her memory on the tales of Wonderland however, sprawled comfortably on her bed and enjoying the relative peace and quiet until her phone chirped.
It is late though and she stares at Steve's message a moment with a frown before typing back a reply.]
Just a friendly reminder, folks, that our friendly neighborhood alien chucklehead is watching us. Lock your messages, people, even if it's only vaguely important. And if you don't trust that, do it in person.
If he shows up to movie night I'm going to be very disappointed in all of you.
[Steve has needed a couple of days to let everything sink in. As expected, Bucky hadn't reacted well to learning about his future, and while Steve himself didn't have to struggle with any revelations, it still hadn't been an easy conversation.
So he's been quiet in the days after his birthday, but it really has nothing to do with that. He worked so hard to avoid putting Bucky through the pain of knowing the truth, and yet in the end he hadn't been able to keep it from him forever. Now he's got to wait until Bucky will let him help pick up the pieces.
But there's someone else who could get caught up in this too, and eventually Steve gathers up the composure to contact Natasha. As easy as it would be to just knock on her door, he decides to send a text instead.]
[ Steve easing into anything via text is suspicious in itself, because usually if he needs something, he just comes across the hall to knock on her door. When he does text, it tends to be short and to the point, something she usually appreciates about him.
This, though...
She stares at the text for a moment, brow furrowed in a frown as she considers it before finally typing back a reply. ]
[ At the end of the day, when all mirrors are back on the other side and Natasha eventually returns to her room, she'll find the following message written in her mirror. ]
[ Cryptic? Possibly. But John's pretty sure Natasha's way smarter than necessary, so she should be able to easily decipher his concern. He has to know she's really okay and there's not going to be many ways more accurate than face-to-face. ]
[ It's pinned to the door when Natasha returns from breakfast in the morning. A sequence of numbers, signed with ℕ.ℝ. in neat black print. When decoded, it's a set of coordinates to the gym in the house. A timestamp for 0900H, which is long past. The idea isn't punctuality. ]
[ Natasha shows up a short while later, having had her breakfast and her coffee and perhaps a little poking her nose into places on her way back before she spotted the note. It had been easy enough to find the location of the coordinates, a place she'd glanced in briefly before but hasn't had a chance to break in yet. Reorienting herself with the people and places of Wonderland is still keeping her quite busy, after all.
She saunters in, curious and comfortable and relaxed, to arch an eyebrow at the other woman in inquiry. ]
[ After having an initial meltdown via text at Steve, she takes a breath and figures she should text Natasha to lessen some of the surprises when they come back. ]
[ Rephrase, Darcy. That's not gonna mean a whole lot right now to Natasha. ]
He was here before like you and now he's back with no memory of this place. Again, like you. [ Only Natasha's re-Wonderland 101 was a lot less of a stressful experience. ]
